Binocular Vision Dysfunction Can Leave You Feeling Dizzy and Disorientated

We rely heavily on our eyes to orient ourselves and maintain our balance. So when we experience disorientation, dizziness, or vertigo, it can be disabling. These symptoms can be a result of your eyes having trouble working together to create one clear image, a condition called binocular vision dysfunction (BVD).

What Is Binocular Vision Dysfunction?

Binocular vision is the eyes’ ability to coordinate as a team. When the two eyes do not line up, either horizontally (side to side) or vertically (up and down), they struggle to put the two different images together in order to see one clear image.

What Are Common Symptoms of Binocular Vision Dysfunction?

The symptoms of BVD can come in waves throughout the day, leading you to feel absolutely fine one moment and unwell the next.

Besides disorientation, dizziness, and vertigo, other common symptoms associated with BVD are:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety
  • Motion sickness
  • Poor depth perception
  • Poor coordination and clumsiness
  • Aching eyes, especially with eye movement
  • Neck, upper back or shoulder pain
  • Head tilting

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and want to know if you havebinocular vision dysfunction, our team will assess your visual function and recommend the appropriate treatment.

How Can Binocular Vision Dysfunction Be Treated?

The main way to resolve BVD is to correct the misalignment with custom prism eyeglasses. Featuring a prismatic lens, these glasses reposition the perceived location of an object, allowing the eyes to receive one clear image. This enables the eye muscles to no longer strain to correct the skewed vision, thereby reducing the dizziness and disorientation that people with binocular vision dysfunction experience.

Don’t continue feeling off-balance. Let Calgary assess your vision and treat your binocular vision dysfunction or any other eye problem.
