Important Update: Changes to Alberta Health Care Coverage for Optometric Services
Effective February 1st 2025, the Alberta Government is making significant changes to the funding of optometric services. These changes were implemented without consultation
from the Alberta Association of Optometrists. Since 2017, optometric funding have remained unchanged, despite inflation.
To continue providing quality care and maintain operations, a co-pay will be in place for our
medical services. We understand this may cause inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we navigate these changes.
What’s Changing?
Coverage for Alberta Health Care Eye Exams:
- Children (18 and under) & Seniors (65 and older):
Partial eye examinations will no longer be covered.
A co-pay will now be required for most medical eye examinations. - Adults (Ages 19-64):
Routine eye examinations remain uncovered by Alberta Health Care.
Patients are encouraged to explore coverage through third-party insurance plans.
